favoriteOur story

Thread of Africa

A bespoke tailoring house devoted to African dress, in the heart of the City of London.

Thread of Africa began with a simple belief: that the clothes you wear for the biggest days of your life should be made for you — in cloth you love, cut to your body, by people who care how it turns out.

From our studio on Leyden Street, a stone's throw from Petticoat Lane, we design and hand-sew agbada, kaftans, gowns, two-pieces and wedding outfits in the finest African fabrics. We dress grooms and brides, whole aso-ebi parties, and first-time clients who just want something that finally fits. And when you bring us a garment that needs taking in, letting out or bringing back to life, our alterations bench treats it with exactly the same care.

We are proud to sit where London and Africa meet — traditional technique, contemporary tailoring, and a welcome that makes the whole thing feel easy.

What we stand for

Our promise

Heritage, worn with pride

We work in the cloth and cut of a whole continent — Yoruba aso-oke, Ghanaian kente, Ankara wax print, guipure and cord lace — and we style each with respect for the people and occasions it belongs to.

A studio, not a factory

Nothing here is mass-produced. You meet the people who cut and sew your outfit, and your measurements stay on file for next time.

Made for real life

From a groom's agbada to a nursery-run kaftan, we make clothes to be worn, danced in and remembered — not left in a wardrobe.
